UPAA Davao 2011 Projects

The UP Alumni Association-Davao Chapter has a number of projects in the year 2011. The first major project was the Regional Alumni Institute that was held  in February 12, 2011 with the participation of 20th UP President Alfredo E. Pascual. To recap:

  • The Regional Alumni Institute. The RAI was held on February 12, 2011 at the Marco Polo Hotel, attended by UP President Alfredo Pascual, UPAA President Gladys Tiongco and Directors. The lead resource speaker was Dr. Cielito Habito with other resource persons Ms. Janet Lopoz, Mr. Guido Delgado, Dr. Peter Bartelmus, Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, Dr. Ruben Villareal, and UP Mindanao Chancellor Gilda Rivero.

  • Oblation Plaza Landscaping Project. The 1st Phase of the project was completed and opened on September 9, 2011 with UP President Alfredo Pascual, UPAA President and Alumni Regent Gladys Tiongco, among others.

  • Uniforms for the UP Mindanao Ladies Football Team. The donation for the uniforms were given by Mr. Eric Pasion of RUN4CHANGE in December 16, 2011 on the occasion of the UP Mindanao Kasadya Lantern Parade.

  • Tagbo 2011 UP Mindanao Student Leadership Camp. This annual event was supported by the UP Alumni Association through a donation. A total of some fifty students joined the camp in 2011.

  • The TEE 4 TWO Open Golf Tournament was held on October 15, 2011 at Apo Golf and Country Club and an Awarding and Evening Fellowship at Garden Oases Resort in Davao City. The project committee chairmen were UPAAD Chairman Patrick John Castro and alumnus Eugene Go with UPAAD Directors Ludwig Ruyeras and Abram Rei Litonjua as members.The beneficiary for this fundraising event are the UPAA Davao Math Literacy Project and the UP Mindanao Oblation project.

  • The UPAA Davao Math Literacy Project. The Project aims to improve the low math literacy among elementary school children in Davao City. The Project Launch was held on November 17, 2011 with former UP President Emil Javier as Keynote Speaker and former UPLB Chancellor Ruben Villareal as Resource Speaker. The project committee chairman is UPAAD Director John Carlo Tria and the pilot trainers team will be from the UP Mindanao College of Science and Mathematics Dept. of Math, Physics and Computer Science to be led by Prof. Nilo Oponda, Ph.D. The Trainors Training will be held in January 2012 and the first batch for the Elementary Teachers Training will be trained in April 2012.

  • Demo Farm. Chair: Romy Palcon. Members: Joe Nobleza and Joel Sagadal. To be arranged.
  • The 2012 Fun Run. To be arranged. Beneficiary: The UP Mindanao Oblation Plaza

 

 

UP President Pascual visits UPMin to Open UPAA-Davao's Oblation Plaza

UP President Alfredo E. Pascual visited UP Mindanao on September 9 to open the Oblation Plaza Landscaping Project of the UP Alumni Association-Davao and a new dormitory annex building.

This special event called, "Pahalipay (Merriment) Alang Kang PAEP" is part of the Pre-Investiture Activities lined up by the UP System to celebrate the Investiture of the 20th University President to be held on September 15.

President Pascual's visit began at 8:00 AM with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Dormitory Annex Building at the College of Science and Mathematics Grounds, followed by a visit to the Biotechnology Building and Facilities.

At 8:45AM, President Pascual led the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the UPAA-Davao Oblation Plaza Landscaping Project in front of the Administration Building.

The landscaping project is in honor of the unified efforts of the UP alumni from 1969 to 1995 to establish a UP in Mindanao.


 

Launch of Math Literacy Development Program

The UP Alumni Association Davao launched its Math Literacy Development Program (MLDP) on November 17, 2011 at Nanay Bebeng Restaurant, Davao City. The Program will equip elementary math teachers with enhanced methods for teaching math to school children.

National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) President Dr. Emil Q. Javier delivered the Keynote Address. Dr. Ruben L. Villareal presented the Los Banos project experience. Also present in the launch were representatives from the local government unit of Davao City, the Department of Education, and UP Mindanao. The launch program follows:

The UP Alumni Association - Davao Chapter (UPAAD) is based in Davao City where UP Mindanao (UPMin) is located. UPAAD therefore is constantly present in UPMin activities. In turn, many of UPAAD-initiated activities are directed towards UP Mindanao. UPAAD was founded in 1949 and the year 2009 is its 60th founding anniversary, or diamond year. The UPAAD was instrumental in the creation of UP Mindanao.

UPAA-DAVAO was awarded "Outstanding Chapter" in 2003 and in 2010.
